Those who jump directly into A\/B tests without first observing user behavior are usually just testing gut-feeling hypotheses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Testing is typically done where traffic is concentrated and actions occur: homepages, landing pages, forms, pricing pages, and checkout flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prioritization with PIE, PXL, or TIR<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As more test ideas emerge than can be implemented in parallel, established frameworks prioritize hypotheses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/webraketen.space\/en\/glossary\/pie-framework-cro\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"21\" title=\"PIE Framework\">PIE Framework<\/a> evaluates each idea based on potential (expected uplift), importance (traffic share of the affected page), and ease (implementation effort), usually on a scale of 1 to 10. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peep Laja's PXL framework replaces the subjective scale with yes\/no questions, such as whether the change is visible above the fold or concerns a testimonial. As the number of parallel tests grows and multiple stakeholders prioritize, PXL reduces subjective variation in scoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Methods and Tools in Use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CRO relies on two types of data that complement each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quantitative data shows what happens: Web analytics tools like Google Analytics or Matomo provide funnel metrics, while A\/B testing platforms such as Optimizely, VWO, AB Tasty, or Convert Experiences compare variants against the original version. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qualitative data shows why it's happening: Heatmaps and session recordings from Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity, Mouseflow, or Smartlook show where users click, scroll, and abandon. Microsoft Clarity is free and identifies friction points through metrics like rage clicks and dead clicks. This is a sensible starting point if there's no budget for paid tools yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practical mistake is to start A\/B testing without qualitative research beforehand. A test can only decide between the variants presented; it doesn't show which variants would be sensible in the first place. Heatmaps, recordings, and interviews provide this preliminary work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Setting up A\/B tests correctly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two errors regularly invalidate A\/B tests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first is the prematurely aborted test: As soon as variant B is \u201ein the lead\u201c after a few days, it is declared the winner, even though the sample size is too small for a reliable statement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second is the underpowered test, meaning too small a sample from the outset. An analysis of 115 A\/B tests by Georgi Georgiev (Analytics Toolkit) found that almost 70 percent were underpowered. Their result is therefore statistical noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, this means that before the test begins, a power analysis is used to calculate how many visitors per variant are needed to detect an expected uplift with a significance level of 95 percent (alpha = 0.05). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This number, combined with daily traffic, results in the minimum runtime. Additionally, at least one full business cycle should be covered, usually a whole week, so that both weekend and weekday users are included in the sample. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who change multiple elements in parallel cannot attribute the effect to any single change in the end. For this, multivariate tests are the appropriate framework, not an inflated A\/B test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a good conversion rate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There isn't a blanket \u201egood\u201c value; the metric fluctuates depending on the industry, device, and channel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In German e-commerce, the average conversion rate across all industries in 2025 will be around 2.0 to 2.3 percent (uptain Conversion Rate Report 2025). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gap between industries is large: habitual products like tobacco and e-cigarettes lead with 7.30 percent, because the purchasing decision and repurchase frequency work differently than with purchases requiring explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both device and channel move the value. Desktop users typically convert at twice the rate of mobile users, at 3-4 percent compared to 1.5-2 percent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paid search traffic via <a href=\"https:\/\/webraketen.space\/en\/google-ads-agency\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"Google Ads Agency\">Google Ads<\/a> Search averages between 3.75 and 4.40 percent because the <a href=\"https:\/\/webraketen.space\/en\/glossary\/such-intention\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"12\" title=\"Such an intention\">Such an intention<\/a> is more specific. Social ads have a lower rate, ranging from about 0.90 to 1.50 percent. A meaningful comparison, therefore, does not pit your own overall CVR against an average value, but rather your own CVR by industry, device, and channel against the appropriate benchmark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another practical consideration: According to the Nielsen Norman Group, about 40 percent of users leave a page if it takes more than 3 seconds to load. Performance is therefore often a more effective lever than layout changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When conversion optimization is worthwhile and when it is not<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CRO better leverages existing traffic and thereby increases the ROI of marketing expenditures without needing to purchase additional clicks. The approach works when three prerequisites are met: sufficient traffic for statistically significant tests, a suitable offer for the target audience, and a product that delivers on the website's promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there's a lack of traffic, every test becomes a test of patience: if it runs for weeks, the conditions (campaigns, season, assortment) become outdated; if it runs for a shorter period, it's underpowered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this situation, traffic generation is the primary lever. If the target audience doesn't match the offer, no button color or form shortening can compensate for the difference. The issue here lies with positioning and channel selection. And if the product itself is weak, has high return rates, or fails to meet expectations, CRO merely shifts the problem to after-sales. In these cases, it makes more sense to first address traffic, positioning, or the product before CRO is applied as an optimization layer on top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FAQ<\/h2>\n\n\n<div id=\"rank-math-faq\" class=\"rank-math-block\">\n<div class=\"rank-math-list\">\n<div id=\"faq-question-1785139899548\" class=\"rank-math-list-item\">\n<h3 class=\"rank-math-question\">Is conversion optimization the same as conversion rate optimization?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"rank-math-answer\">\n\n<p>In practice, both terms are used synonymously, as is the English abbreviation CRO. Individual sources attempt a fine distinction, according to which conversion optimization refers to the entire process and conversion rate optimization only to the efficiency of key figures. However, this difference is not a consensus and is irrelevant for practical application.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"faq-question-1785139911421\" class=\"rank-math-list-item\">\n<h3 class=\"rank-math-question\">When should you build traffic instead of optimizing?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"rank-math-answer\">\n\n<p>If the test duration for a statistically reliable evaluation becomes so long that the framework conditions change in the meantime, the traffic base is too small for CRO.
